OVCC President's Message for the 2016 Cricket Season

Ovcc Web Admin (ovcc)

Amit ThomasDear OVCC Members,

Welcome to the 2016 OVCC cricket season.  This season promises to be an exciting one!

For the new players who are joining the league, we welcome you into our cricket family and wish you the best of success on and off the field.  For those of you who are returning, I thank you for your commitment to and support for our wonderful game and look forward to catching up with each of you over the season.  I extend a warm welcome to Kingston CC who have joined our league in the Citizen and T20 format.  We look forward to playing exciting cricket with them in both home and away matches.
This year we have a lot of exciting things under way in the league.  To start with, we have a brand new Executive.  All four members of this year’s committee, including myself, are brand new to the job which is an unprecedented situation.  We are all very keen to learn and to serve and we hope to leave cricket in Ottawa in a much better state when our mandate ends in 2 years.

We are optimistic that the memorandum signed by the Ontario Cricket Association ( and the Cricket Council of Ontario ( pledging to work together will finally unite cricket in Ontario.  This is a most welcome step that hopefully heralds the start of a new era in cooperation.  From an OVCC perspective, we would like this this to lead to more representation of our players at the provincial level and OCA participation in CCO tournaments so that our best, young players get a chance to be viewed by the national selectors and to stake a claim for a spot on the Ontario and Canada teams.

This year will feature the start of the Ottawa Premier League (OPL) T-20 tournament format.  This is an exciting twist on the old T20 format where the early rounds will culminate in an exciting mid-summer single knockout tournament with substantial cash prizes to the winning teams.  The tournament will serve as the catalyst to seed the league’s new infrastructure fund that will sponsor cricket initiatives in the years to come.  Your support for the T20 tournament is key to making this happen.

We have lots of great things going on with the OVCC Juniors who will be working with the Ottawa Youth Cricket Academy to develop young talent.   If you know young players who are U-19 and looking to play cricket, email our Junior coordinator Darlene Batstone (
The level of umpiring in our league has improved steadily over the years and I thank the outgoing chairman of the OVUA, Mr. Anwer Omar, for his dedication to improving standards and keeping us on top of the latest ICC rule changes through organizing umpiring education seminars.  We are very proud that we will have 2 Level III umpires (Kamal Setia and Rahul Raikwar) in action this season.  We encourage all clubs to take part and support the umpires to keep the games fun and fair.

This year will feature several charity and fundraising events by the clubs.  Various clubs will continue the great tradition of holding Memorial Games to commemorate the passing of former cricketers.  There will be club parties, BBQs etc. over the season.  I urge all members to come out and support these events.  The only way our league can grow and prosper is for all the clubs to support each other and attending these events is very important to show your support.   Always remember that we are an Ottawa cricket family!!!

Lastly, you are reading this message on our brand new website, which will be the main way to get your news about the league.  We have a high tech scoring system where games will be entered on a smartphone and immediately posted to the website so you can follow your team anywhere in the world.  Many thanks to Mazhar Choudhry for all the hard work in setting up our first class web and social media presence.
I wish you all the best of luck on the field and I hope that the 2016 season will be a healthy and memorable one, filled with cricketing success and that all of you will continue to play the game in the right spirit and always work to move the game forward.
All the best,
Dr. J. Ajit Thomas
