NCC won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mangesh Ambardekar began in his typically commanding fashion while Anshul Kumaria settled down for the long haul. It took a couple of overs for the NCC bowlers to settle into a good rhythm (19 for no loss after 2) but then JJ Tanwar and debutant, Atik Sheikh, dragged the control back with some splendid swing bowling. Atik induced three clear chances that were put down but got his revenge when Mangesh lost his off-stump. JJ soon accounted for Sashank Ganti, caught behind in the 10th over and IBL was 39 for 2 after 10. Atik completed an impressive unbroken opening spell (6-1-22-1) and NCC's captain brought in Akash Bhole and the Jamaican fast bowler, Phil Blake, to continue the pace attack. While Akash kept one end tight, Phil let loose at the other end accounting for two batsmen with bouncers and yorking another (6-0-19-3). Anshul was holding one end up but was left stranded by his partner, the run-out cutting short a calm and composed inning. At 90 for 6, IBL was in trouble but could have been in worse shape if the NCC fielders had not dropped a few easy catches already. Rajesh Nair (39 in 39 balls, no boundaries) and Jean Erasmus (22) repaired the damage with some sharp running and smart batting, not taking any risks but moving the score along. Eventually, Amit Phatak trapped Rajesh LBW and set the stage for the IBL captain Vinod Patel who walked in and, in patented Viru-style, pounded a couple of sixes and a four (29 in 18 balls) but Naveen Bandaru, brought in specifically to polish up in the end overs, took the last three wickets to fall to end IBL's inning at 170. Naveen Bandaru took 3 wickets and Phil took 3 wickets, a catch and affected a run-out. With the regular opener missing, Amit Phatak promoted himself to the opening spot along with Phil Blake. As usual, Phil took the more aggressive route but found the going a little tougher against the tight bowling (and barely decipherable slower balls) of Rajesh Nair, eventually holing out to a splendid running catch by Sashank Ganti at deep midwicket for 19. Shardul Sohani was promoted up the order and responded to the challenge with an unbeaten 81 ball inning that featured just 2 boundaries and 1 six (more on that in a little bit). Amit and Shardul paced the inning beautifully, taking a leaf from the IBL page by running very quickly between the wickets and removing any risky shots from their game. The duo serenely moved the score along to 90 when a slightly distracted Amit lost his concentration and his off-stump to a full ball from Rajesh. (45 runs in 57 balls with 1 six and 2 fours) As typically happens, one wicket quickly led to three as JJ and Naveen were dismissed and NCC was under some mild pressure. Shardul continued on quietly accumulating runs (he had a couple of lucky lives along the way which came back to haunt IBL) while C.S. Manish put away the bad balls and took singles on offer to nudge the score closer to the target. With 12 runs needed and rain in the horizon, Shardul hit a six and a four off successive balls to complete the win. Shardul finished with 58 not out and hit just 1 four in his first 48 runs and 79 balls, ensuring that one end stayed secure through the chase. NCC made 171 for 4 in 34.3 overs. Rajesh Nair bowled his heart out (8-0-29-1) while Shailesh Manek gave admirable support (8-0-46-1). For his inspired bowling and all-round contribution, Phil Blake was adjudged the Man of the Match. The match started at 9:30am and finished by 3:30pm, including time taken for a sumptuous lunch. IBL should be complimented for the buffet-style lunch and generous hospitality throughout the day.
